U.S. Air Force Honor Guard awes crowds in Germany

DÜSSELDORF, Germany — Twenty Airmen from the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team performed at the Musikfest der Bundeswehr Sept. 19.

The military event brought together more than 700 military musicians, ceremonial units and performers from Australia, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The afternoon and evening performances drew an estimated audience of 8,000 spectators.

“It’s a great honor to represent the U.S. Air Force in an international performance,” said Senior Airman Antoine Lee, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard ceremonial guardsman. “I was born in Germany and have a German background, so it means the world to me to be on stage demonstrating international military cooperation.”

The Musikfest began in Düsseldorf in 2017 as a family-oriented military event and has been held eight times. “When I come here, it feels like home,” said German Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Karlheinz Bolz, an escort officer for the event. “People come with their children and grandchildren, and they are proud to see the performers. We have people from many different countries standing together, but at the end of the day, we are all human. I think that is what the Musikfest shows people.”

The Drill Team joined military musicians and ceremonial units from participating nations, representing the U.S. alongside foreign troops in a combined military formation.

“I believe these performances help enable interoperability between allied forces by familiarizing people from each country with one another and building trust and friendships through working toward a common goal,” Lee said.
