Germany Pledges Strong Support for International Criminal Court

(MENAFN) Germany on Monday reaffirmed its strong backing for the International Criminal Court (ICC) amid recent criticism and measures against the tribunal by US President Donald Trump.

“International rules are only as strong as the willingness to stand up for them. Especially at a time when international institutions are increasingly being called into question, we must clearly stand by them together with our global partners,” Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in a statement.

“Germany will do its part to ensure that the ICC remains capable of acting even under pressure,” Wadephul added. He was due to visit the court in The Hague later Monday and hold talks with his Dutch counterpart, Tom Berendsen.

Wadephul said the ICC plays a role in delivering justice in situations where national judicial systems are unable or unwilling to act.

The US does not recognize the ICC and has increasingly imposed sanctions targeting the court and its representatives.

Since its establishment in 2002, the ICC has pursued cases involving some of the most serious international crimes, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Washington has accused the court, among other allegations, of pursuing politically motivated actions.

During last week’s UN General Assembly, Trump urged countries that are members of the ICC to withdraw from the tribunal.
