German Politician Calls for Ukraine to Compensate Berlin Over Nord Stream Case

(MENAFN) A senior figure in Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has reportedly argued that Ukraine should compensate Germany over the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

The pipelines, which were built to transport Russian natural gas to Germany, were severely damaged in explosions that disrupted energy supplies across Europe. According to German investigative findings cited in reports, the attack has been linked to a small group of Ukrainian operatives, with one alleged organizer extradited from Italy to Germany in late 2025.

Moscow has repeatedly disputed the official narrative, suggesting that such a complex operation could not have been carried out by a small team acting alone in waters monitored by NATO without some level of state involvement.

Speaking at a party event, the AfD co-leader criticized proposals for closer EU ties with Ukraine, describing the country as a “bottomless pit” reliant on substantial foreign financial assistance. She also highlighted the scale of German support, stating that “Germany has already transferred more than €100 billion to Ukraine over the past four years alone.”

She further argued that the circumstances surrounding the Nord Stream explosions remain unresolved and called for greater clarity regarding responsibility. As stated in reports, she questioned Ukraine’s alleged role in what she described as a major act of infrastructure sabotage affecting Germany and Europe.

According to her remarks, she argued that financial flows should be reversed, stating: “The flow of payments should actually be moving in the opposite direction. Ukraine must pay reparations to the Federal Republic of Germany, because we have suffered enormous damage – and so has Europe as a whole – from the loss of cheap Russian fossil fuels.”

She also called for an end to German military and financial assistance to Ukraine, urging a shift toward diplomatic engagement between Kyiv and Moscow and a restoration of dialogue with Russia.

Recent polling data cited in reports indicates that the AfD has seen rising support in Germany, with some surveys placing it ahead of other parties, while public dissatisfaction with the current government leadership has also been reported as notably high.
